Re: [FamilyofGod] Question of the day 5/4

Matthew 25:46 says, "And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life". Notice that the duration of the lost in Hell is exactly the same as the duration of the saved in Heaven, "forever and ever".

some of these sayings are figures of speehes used for the things God is trying emphasize. the unquenshable fire is referring to a fire that no one will be able to put out. it will burn until everything that can burn will be burned up then the fire willl burn itself out. i ask u why would  loving God allow people to go through somehing like that.. we parents would never punishes our kids for eternity if they rejected us.. and God's love is greater than we can comprehend. Right George?

Shelley, I disagree with George's view on this and will not get into a debate with him here.  But, I will you give you what I consider (and many more do, too) to be Biblical truth.

On those who reject Jesus as their Savior:

"And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever." (Revelation 20:10)

"A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name." (Revelation 14:9-11)

"If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." (Revelation 20:15)

The Lake of Fire is never described as being temporary.

"The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire." (Isaiah 1:31)

"The unsaved people in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless: "Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?"" (Isaiah 33:14)

"And they will go out and look upon the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind." (Isaiah 66:24)

"[Jesus is speaking] If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. ... And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'" (Mark 9:43-48)

"They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 13:42)

"This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 13:49-50)

"But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 8:12)

"Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'" (Matthew 22:13)

"And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'" (Matthew 25:30)

Jude tells us that this "blackest darkness" has been reserved for certain wicked people forever:

"They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever." (Jude 1:13)

Jesus made a direct comparison between the eternal nature of life (for Christians) and the eternal nature of punishment (for unsaved people):

"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal [aionios] fire prepared for the devil and his angels. ... Then they will go away to eternal [aionios] punishment, but the righteous to eternal [aionios] life." (Matthew 25:41,46)

The argument here is that in each case, the word "eternal" is translated from the same Greek word aionios. The fire is "eternal" (aionios), and the punishment is "eternal" (aionios), and the life is "eternal" (aionios). For   Christian's, life will go on forever, and the fires of hell will go on forever, and unsaved people's punishment will go on forever.

I also disagree with George on his view about when one dies who is a Believer.... .where the soul/spirit is.  The Bible clearly says we, who are Belivers, that our spirits go back to God who gave them...these 'spirits' of the saints (of which all Believers are) return with Jesus to be re-united with our bodies (for those of us who die before this time) and we will have a body like His.

2 Corinthians 5:6–8 (NIV) Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7 We live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

Philippians 1:23 (NIV) I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;

1 Thessalonians 4:13–14 (NIV) 13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

Contrary to popular opinion "hell"  just means the grave.   When we die we do go to "hell" or the grave.  But thanks to Jesus we all will rise again as Molly said,  "Some to life and some to judgement".  We,  the saints, get life.  The sinners who reject God and His son get the judgment of death.  The penalty for sin is death.  Jesus paid the penalty for our sins so we have life.   We have a choice now.  We either have life if we believe or we have death.  We are all sinners so the difference is in believing Jesus.

and they will rise again. Those who have done good will rise to experience eternal life, and those who have continued in evil will rise to experience judgment.
