[Church_of_Christ] Re: Truth for the World

Dan,

You've got my curiosity flared, and no, I'm not looking for a debate or a fight...I'm genuinely curious here.

What are some of the various meanings you have encountered? I am wondering if our experiences are similar.

Re: [Church_of_Christ] Re: Truth for the World

To Ray

Yes I believe that you are right in your evaluation about McDonalds. If a hamburger joint is named "McDonalds" then that is its denominational designation. Now if there was no other hamburger join in existence then there would not be a need to name it "McDonalds". Because there is no need to distinguish it from another hamburger joint because there are not another. Yes it would not matter what kind of hamburgers they served good or bad or even if they did not serve hamburgers, if it is named it is denominated. Now the point being  God has, "called out people" and they are never named in the new testament. These called out people existed in many of the cities of the first century world. They existed because of what Jesus had done for them and the love they had one for another. They never existed because of organization. Ekklesia describes something in their heart not physical organization as many suppose.

One thing I have observed is that the word "denomination" when used in the church world has various meanings. Within the COC it means something bad as in false teaching where as in the denominational world it does not carry this concept. Occasionally I will hear a COC person say yes we are a denomination. What has happened is they have agreed with the world of denominations and the dictionary that the meaning of the word is "to name". They recognize that they have a name and that name is, "church of Christ" so why not be called a denomination. Where as the preachers in the COC will strongly refuse this designation because they only understand the word as meaning some false doctrine and not as "to name".

     Just my thoughts Dan

Sheri,

You are missing the point of the original argument. The original statement was that denominate means naming something.

Since McDonald's is a name, McDonald's is a denomination. IT doesn't matter if they all look and operate exactly the same way.

If a place has a name, it is a denomination. That was the point of the argument.

It doesn't matter what the different churches teach or do, the point of the argument was NAME. If something has a NAME it is a denomination.

Mind you, I don't believe this is a valid definition of denomination. Not even close. But someone else defined it that way, so I am using their definition to prove that it doesn't work.

> I disagree that that list shows different denominations. I have referred to the McDonald's in Shively and compared it to the McDonald's in Brandenburg and the McDonald's in Okolona. This does not indicate different denominations of McDonald's, just different locations of the place we gather to get a Big Mac. That list of congregations aren't different denominations, just different locations where Christian gather to worship.

[Church_of_Christ] Doulos Meditation for June 3

Scripture: 1 Peter 4:11b—whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ.

Reflection: I wonder if there is such a thing as trying to serve God but doing so out of human strength. Would I really glorify God if I depended on my own money, influence, intelligence or power to accomplish something great for him? What if I single handedly built a church, wrote a book, staged a debate, produced a movie or started a University in service to God? What if I took the credit for all I accomplished? Would God be glorified? Would he be pleased with me?

Or would I find myself in a false position of saying to the world "Look what I've done for God—see how pious I am—how humble and sincere—how dedicated?" This kind of talk is really repulsive to me—I cannot countenance such thoughts. Only God's working through us results in glory to God. Paul wrote, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—not the result of works, so that no one may boast." (Eph 2:8-9) God originates in the believer the works that flow from his will—then he empowers the believer to faithfully pursue his will. Anything else is base, fleshly and condemned.

Prayer Starter: Our God, it is to you we look for all righteousness and on you we depend for the fulfillment of that righteousness. Only your grace makes this possible. Amen.  www.doulosinternational.org

[Church_of_Christ] Re: Something To Think About

Ed,

Verse 9 is a part of the previous context and therefore ought
to understood as contributing to the message of that context.
I see the conext of the verses I quoted as beginning at verse
22 of John 10.
