[Church_of_Christ] Re: Can you guess?

I didn't realize I was making fun of anyone. I thought I was commending you and adding to the list another respected source. But sometimes impressions are left that are not intended and if so I plea guilty. The scholars concluded that first, the individuals kept their contributions at home until Paul came. Second, that the first day of the week the church gathered.

Hi ED,

I went back and read what you wrote and I can understand how you could be agreeing with me. I apologize for misunderstanding you.

Norman:  What did they collect? Was there a church treasury, if so, when did it  start and how was it funded? Were they already commanded to give as they had prospered? Was this contribution above what they were already giving from what they had prospered? Was this a command for all Christians of  all times or was this a temporary collection that ended after Paul came and collected the money and took it back to Judea?

ED: You ask a series of questions for which I have no answers. I simply do not know.

Norman: I don't know either; however, that is not important if you do not insist that the collection was placed in the church treasury on Sunday. I simply don't know if they set aside a sum of money at home and then met every Sunday. It seems that the argument for a meeting every Sunday was so they could set aside a sum of money in the church treasury. IMO, that narrows the verse down to a request to make sure they lay aside money every Sunday in the cookie jar; end of request. Scripture silent beyond that.

Norman: Did the Greek scholars above know about this awkward Greek when  they said the collection was made a home on the first day of the week?  If they stored it up at home and then went to church on Sunday that  defeats you argument that they were commanded to give while they were  assembled every Sunday.

ED: Yes the scholars mention the awkward Greek and it contributes to their conclusion that it indicates the Lord's Day.

Norman: That is not important if the collection was not at church. Everyone believes that every first day of the week was the day the collection was collected.

Norman: No one  here is saying they were meeting every day. What we are saying is there  is not a command to single out Sunday and make a command to keep that  day and only that day.

ED: What I am saying is that the Lord's Day is the first day of the week. Moreover, that there was a day when the disciples assembled and when disciples consistently forsook it, this was an indication of their drifting from Christ. Instead they are encouraged to exhort each other as the day approached. I believe that day is the Lord's Day. If the first day of the week isn't the Lord's Day, what day is?

Norman: Ed, the Bible does not say what the Lord's Day is; therefore, it would be foolish for me say it was a certain day. The question that we are discussing is not when the Lord's Day was, the question is; does the Bible say that the Christians lay by in store when they went to the assembly every Sunday. If the collection was made at home, then, the argument that church met every Sunday because they were commanded to place their money in the church treasury every Sunday, is a moot point.

Norman: And what does *to break  bread* mean? Was this a meeting to take the LS, sing, pray, take up a  collection, preach the word. That is what is taught by those who insist  that this is a command to keep Sunday and Sunday only. Was this the 5 part worship that is insisted on by those who make it a legal command?

ED: To break bread in Acts 20 is a reference to the LS, I believe, and yes, I believe they also worshiped in other ways.

Acts 20:7Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread. This is what scripture says. It does not say *every* and it does not say *Lord's Supper*. That is added.

Norman: You have a right to believe what you want to believe; however, you have no right to teach it as a biblical fact. It is just not there.

Norman: was this only the meeting of the church to have a common meal and fellowship or was this a meeting to eat a common meal and take the LS? I don't know, do you?

ED: I believe it was the LS and an assembly for worship.

Norman: Again, that is speculation based on an assumption. That does not come from scripture.

Norman: Again, this is not Biblical fact that Paul delayed 7 days to meet with the disciple on Sunday that comes from speculation of history.

ED: What is biblical? Paul was in a hurry. Paul stayed 7 days (stayed = delayed). He met with the disciples on Sunday, they worshiped and he left immediately following. Doesn't sound so much like speculation when you take the biblical facts.

Norman: What is biblical, Paul was in a hurry. Yes, that is biblical. Paul stayed 7 days at Troas, Yes, that is biblical. Paul met with the church on the first day of the week. Yes, that is biblical. Paul stayed in Troas 7 so he could meet with the church on the first day of the week. No, that is not biblical. That is an opinion and should not be taught as thus saith the Lord.

Norman: I believe you we will agree that *in your opinion* and *in my  opinion* are equal when it comes to creating law of God that everyone  must follow. I also believe we would agree that that the early church  fathers did not always agree with what scripture teaches. I've run out of time & must take my grandson home.

Norman: I am sorry you ran out of time, because I believe the remainder of the post is very important to the modern day Christian.

Thanks,

Norman
