[Church_of_Christ] Re: The essence of worship
In 1969 I signed on for a course on Restoration History at David
Lipscomb College. There were probably 30+ in the class, mostly young men
who were planning to one day preach or work with the church in some full
time manner. I had come to DLC from FHC the year before as one other in
the class. I soon discovered that there was a total lack of respect for
former generations and the efforts they had made, the sacrifices they
had made, and the love of God and his word that had filled their hearts.
They were there because it was a required course. They often ridiculed
all who had come before them. I never got used to it. I still am not
used to it.
I am grateful for those who came before me. I respect their efforts, the
accomplishments they made, even the conlcusions they drew, even when I
differ in some way or another. Somehow I believe this is what the Lord
would of done had he been in my shoes. The assembly with which I gather
is different from it was as I was a boy and the assembly with which I
work is different from when I first arrived in 1980. There have been
many changes; nothing of substance in "doctrine" but certainly in
emphasis and in practice. As I view the changes, I believe for the most
part they are good and healthy; but I also see some that are unhealthy.
One of the unhealthy is a failure to appreciate that this is not the
first generation to question and test those things we hold dear. It is a
shallowness of thought that concludes that it alone thinks critically.
