[Church_of_Christ] Re: The Swinging Door
Your brother George K. Howsepian to our dear brother Ray,
My questions, answers, and comments are below.
--- In Church_of_Christ@
George: I believe what Paul taught, that there were divisions among the Corinthian believers. Does it matter what they were divided over?
Ray: I have no interest in your defense of me. Nor is your opinion of my 'rightness' of any value. And I have no fear of your opinion now regardless of what it is. Rest easy.
George: I hope you don't mind my defense of your being right anyway.
Ray: It is completely different in principle. The principle of separating according to leaders bears no relevance to separating over doctrine. The correction of the problem is easier too. Those divided over leaders have the same doctrine. Therefore, get rid of the 'pedestal mentality' and the problem is over.
George: You're happy believing there weren't any differences in doctrine. I'm not. I can't believe all the leaders were teaching the same thing and yet, the followers were choosing which leader they would follow. I just can't believe how that could work. Forgive me.
Ray: Actually, we are not following people at all. These practices were established many generations ago. Individual churches follow the traditions of that church. The actual influence of the founders is no longer relevant.
George: The founders established the traditions and practices. Following those traditions and practices, a church follows it's founder. How is it the founder is "no longer relevant?" Do you really believe Luther is no longer relevant in a Lutheran church?
Ray: We are far more united than any gives credit for.
George: We are also more divided now than ever before.
