And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God said the light was good; and God divided the light from the darkness (Genesis 1:3,4, KJV).
Now the serpent (Satan) was craftier than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, 'You shall not eat from any tree in the garden'?" The woman said to the serpent, "From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God said, 'You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.'" The serpent said to the woman, "You surely will not die!" (Genesis 3:1–4, NASB)
Have you heard the saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me?" Well, the words from Satan did hurt; they were the downfall of man.
Unfortunately, we have all been guilty of saying something we did not mean which hurt someone. I have come to realize there are many, many ways our words can have an impact on us and others. What we say and what we think can impact those around us.
Good words bless, encourage, make others feel better, and bring us blessings as we speak them. Negative words, on the other hand, cause hurt, destroy self-confidence, and ruin relationships. When we have bad days and feel negative, we need to ask ourselves whose voice we are listening to. God will never speak destructive, negative things to us. But the devil will plant negative thoughts in our minds, and wants us to continue dwelling on them until they become habits that are hard to break.
Words and thoughts can bring life and hope, or they can tear down, destroy and kill.
Lord, let us pay attention to our words, and guard our tongues and always choose life. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
