The Ten Commandments was top movie in 1956 with a gross of $85,400,000 (not allowing for inflation, meaning that in real terms it would be a great deal more).
There is no greater love than this, to give up your life willingly for others. Incidentally, in the same decade two other Biblical epics were the top grossing films of their year too:
Ben Hur, grossing $73,000 in 1959 and
Quo Vadis, grossing $30,000,000 in 1951.
However, the top grossing movie of the whole of the 1950s was not a Biblical epic, but was "The Lady and the Tramp" grossing $93,600,000 in 1955.
