The Ten Commandments was top movie in 1956 with a gross of $85,400,000 (not allowing for inflation, meaning that in real terms it would be a great deal more).

Incidentally, in the same decade two other Biblical epics were the top grossing films of their year too:

Ben Hur, grossing $73,000 in 1959 and

Quo Vadis, grossing $30,000,000 in 1951.

However, the top grossing movie of the whole of the 1950s was not a Biblical epic, but was "The Lady and the Tramp" grossing $93,600,000 in 1955.
