We are talking about messenger 9.0 and the other messenger programs. Where you can sit and chat one on one with friends and family. Or you can have a conference and chat with several people at once.

There is also messenger now that comes with the "New Yahoo Mail" there is no downloading of the messenger that way.

There are a few of us that use messenger to contact one another really fast when we have an urgent problem or just to sit and chat.

Yes, with Messenger 9.0 and the other versions of messenger you can access the chat rooms. Like you, I stay out of those. Get myself into enough problems with plain messenger. At least there you can choose who you want to talk to.
