Re: [FamilyofGod] Question of the day 5/5
The Shema is more than what is found in verse 4 - which is notoriously difficult to translate from the Hebrew and continues to cause debate between translators. There are at least 4 equally likely translations that do precious little to shed light on the topic.
It is a hard argument to try to make this verse be a declaration against the trinity in light of ALL possible translations.
1) The LORD (YHWH) is our God, the LORD alone.
2) The LORD our God is one LORD.
3) The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
4) The LORD is our God, the LORD is one.
Evidence suggests that in Deut. the verse has something to di with exclusive worship if the one Lord - as opposed to polytheism. The trinity doctrine doesn't suggest or support polytheism. It isn't violating this verse.
The Shema is etched on the hearts and doorposts of the Jewish people. What Jesus taught was much deeper than verse 4.

What does that have to do with the Hebrew word "hear"?
Can we really take the Jewish perspective of things in totality when it is traditionally speaking they who consistently wait for the Messiah that came already? Just a thought.
