You are welcome, Shelley.  I love the woman at the well.  It is amazing to me at a time when a Samaritan is unclean and women were thought of as property lower than a man's goat that Jesus picked a Samaritan woman to be his first evangelist!!

Subject: Re: [FamilyofGod] Fwd: Could Jesus Have Survived the Crucifixion?

Jesus didn't accuse the woman at the well of adultery actually.  It's pretty interesting.  Like I said in the other post -- I love this story!

John 4:16-18, "Jesus said to her, 'God, call your husband, and come back.'  the woman answered him, 'I have no husband,'  Jesus said to her, 'You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband.  What you have said is true!'"

The question is -- why has she had so many husbands?  There are actually multiple possibilities -- so what Jesus REALLY meant by this is unknown a little bit.  The woman didn't seem repentant or asking for forgiveness (unlike other accounts of women 'caught in sin').  She was simply very surprised he KNEW this information.  With this, she knew he was the Messiah.  She says later that he told everything she had ever done -- that doesn't always imply sins.

Divorce was very easy at this time.  It's one of the reasons why Jesus spoke against it.  Women were property.  Marriage wasn't about love.  It was about a business arrangement.  Divorced women were many times left out in the cold.  They weren't bothered with, and many resorted to prostitution in order to earn money to eat.  It wasn't a pretty sight really.  Women could be divorced on any grounds.  It didn't have to make ANY sense.  If a man was bored with her, she could be tossed to the curb.  Not a pleasant practice, and it makes plenty of sense why Jesus HATED it.  However, this woman has been married 5 times.  It doesn't mention  she was divorced 5 times.  It is highly possible that her previous husbands died.  It is also likely that they were brothers.  Jews practiced what was called Levirate marriage.  If you married a man and he died, you were literally passed on to his brother like you were a piece of property (technically as a woman you were property).  It was a common practice.  It was a way to keep the connections made with a marriage in the family or the clan.  It is STILL practiced in some cultures.

Deuteronomy 25:5-6, "When brothers reside together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall NOT be married outside the family to a stranger.  Her husband's brother shall go in to her, taking her in marriage, and performing the duty of a husband's brother to her, and the firstborn whom she bears shall succeed the name of the deceased brother, so that his name may not be blotted out of Israel."

However, sadly -- the marriage is still up to the man.  The woman didn't have a say so.  If the woman has been passed down through the brothers and the last brother doesn't want her, she is essentially STUCK.  As property, though, she is still in the home with the family.  The women just didn't have the rights to deal with this practice at all.  Likely, the Samaritan woman (who isn't Mary Magdalene) was caught up in the Levirate marriage practice and didn't have much of a choice in her living situation.  Jesus' mentioning of this is more about how he KNEW her.  It was clear that he was no ordinary man.  He is the Messiah!

I think part of the whole issue with Mary of Magdala (or Mary Magdalene) is that many think she was a prostitute. There is, however, nothing in scripture that states she was a prostitute at all. So - it adds to the problem. But isnt it in the realm of possibity that someone is around from Jesus' family line?  He did has brothers and sisters.

Could Jesus Have Survived the Crucifixion?
Greg Laurie

The swoon theory is one of Satan's oldest lies concerning the Resurrection. This theory proposes that Jesus did not rise from the dead, because He never really died. Instead, Jesus went into a deep coma or "swoon" from the severe pain and trauma of the Crucifixion. Then, in the cool atmosphere of the tomb, Christ revived, somehow escaped the strips of cloths that were wrapped tightly upon Him, and then appeared to His disciples.

The swoon theory flies in the face of the facts. You see, the Roman guards were experts at execution and would be put to death if they allowed a condemned man, like Christ, to escape death. The guards were certain Jesus was dead, because when they thrust a spear into His side, it brought forth blood and water. This was their final proof of His death because this occurs when the heart stops beating.

Some time ago I read a local advice column that featured a reader's question about the Resurrection. The reader asked, "Dear Uticus, Our preacher said that Jesus swooned on the cross and then His disciples nursed Him to health. What do you think? Signed, Bewildered." Uticus responded, "Dear Bewildered, Beat your preacher with a cat-o'-nine-tails thirty-nine times. Nail him to a cross. Hang him in the sun for six hours. Run a spear through his side, embalm him, and put him in an airless tomb for thirty-six hours and see what happens. Sincerely, Uticus."

Uticus' response points to the ridiculousness of the swoon theory. Amazingly enough, people still subscribe to this theory. Not because it's plausible. Not because it's logical, but because it's something to hang their doubt on. The truth of the matter is that Jesus Christ has risen!
