I don't think it was out of fear actually. In Matthew, in the midst of the final week of Christ's life, Christ spoke in Matthew 24 of the dangers to come for the disciples. He said it would happen in their generation and that it would show people falling away even being killed because of Christ. But scripture doesn't list that as a reason behind his betrayal.

Matthew 26:14-16, "Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, 'What will you give me if I betray him to you?' They paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.".

It was needed that a friend of Jesus pointed him out to the authorities because the arrest was at night. In the dark, they would not be able to be sure they were arresting the right man. Thus, they needed Judas to help them in order to go through with the arrest.

Both in Matthew and Mark, the decision to betray Jesus comes after the disciples disproval of the woman that anointed Jesus with expensive perfume that the disciples thought could have been sold for a large sum of money. Luke doesn't record the anointing at Bethany, and John (not one of the synoptic gospels) doesn't record when Judas goes to the chief priests to discuss the betrayal.

Likely, the anointing is unrelated to Judas's choice to betray Jesus. He only motivation that it shown is in Matthew and Mark - money.

Jesus knew that judas had a spirit that would betray him, even as he asked him to come with him. it was fortold that one who would walk with him would betray him.
