[FamilyofGod] I will not forget thy word. Psalm 119;16
Some mornings I have the uneasy feeling that I read my bible just so I can cross it off my " to do" list and get on with my day. By noon, I"ve forgotten what I"ve read. No wonder I perked up when Lucy Shephard , a daily guideposts reader from Columbus, Georgia, wrote me about her method of bible study, which brings God intimately into her life all day long. She calls it "gleaning " from the Old Testament description of Ruth gleaning her daily portion of grain ---- her sustenance for life---from the wheat fields of Boaz. Lucy's tools are a Bible, a bookmark that suggests daily scripture readings and a handmade notebook entitled " Gleanings. " She begins by asking God to reveal a special verse to her ; she then reads that day's Scripture until one glow's, and copies it in her notebook. She closes by asking God to help her remember , apply and draw strength from that verse all day long. I tried gleaning yesterday. Reading in Matthew 6, I chose " Do not lay up for yourselfs treasures on earth ...." I tucked the verse in my mind and was amazed how often the word treasures kept popping out at me. " Treasures for a Lifetime ! " promised a jewelry ad. ( Earthly treasure, I decided. ) " My Grandmother is a treasure, " a friend told me. ( Love is a heavenly treasure. ) I wrote these examples in my notebook at the end of the day and read Lucy's letter again : " Gleaning is like going on a treasure hunt in God's Word every morning. " Now, you might think these were coincidental sightings of a common word, but I believe gleaning kept my spiritual antenna on alert all day long. Lord , I am thankful for the treasure of finding a new way to weave your Word into my day.
