Actually,  this was a mistranslation.  It should say that "he" was manifest in the flesh referring to Jesus.  It didn't say "God".  You have to realize that the new testament was translated or transcribed well after the trinity doctrine had been established.  The scribes were mostly all trinitarians. But if we study we can find the errors.

His only Son ( God in human form ) means, God's own manifestation.
