[Church_of_Christ] Re: Are we misunderstanding the scriptures?
Greetings Cole & Norman, ED responding,
Cole wrote: And one reason they don't see it is because of the convincing arguments made by proof texting the Scriptures. Barna writes, "God's people have approached the New Testament with scissors and glue, cutting and pasting isolated, disjointed sentences from different letters, lifting them out of their real-life setting, lashing them together to build floatable doctrines, and then calling it "the word of God".

Norman: I agree! When people are bombarded with those arguments three times a week it is very difficult to understand the overall picture of the gospel. I find myself beginning to believe the conclusions that come from the proof text when I listen to them again. We were taught not to read any material other than the (inspired) CoC scholars. The internet is an excellent way to hear pro and con on the subject and we can learn from others, if we want to change. Many are
afraid to change, because they have been taught that they have the perfect interpretation of the Bible and to change makes them imperfect. They need to understand that grace covers the imperfect, not the perfect. Grace is not for the law keeper it is only for the law breaker.
ED: "cutting and pasting", "proof texting", etc. WRONG! We both agree. It is faulty. So now we have that out of the way. Let's get down to work discussing the scriptures. I have provided scriptures. I don't see any in response. Only claims and charges, as so often is the case. If I have cut and pasted, show me where and how and if I have misrepresented the text, I will cease and desist.
The fact is I went thru the same questioning of CoC "traditions" years ago, in fact decades ago. Read all the Ketchereside, Mission Mag. Cecil Hook, Leroy Garret, etc. I studied our "traditions"
If you really believe what you say, then defend it scripturally. If I misrepresent the scripture, demonstrate it with a careful biblical answer. I am tired of the bluster and bluff; the smoke and mirrors.
