Ray: There is nothing in scripture that supports this statement. Not one word. The purpose of the gifts is revealed in I Cor 12:3. They are for building up (edifying, which results in maturing) the church.
ED: You are mistaken. It is interesting that for centuries the "cessationist" view was the norm, standard. Evidently a lot of people thought they saw many words that led to this meaning. I still do.
Cessationism has indeed been the norm. Doesn't make it true. Satan has always suppressed God's people and kept them from freely enjoying the blessings and benefits of the new covenant. And now, with the enlightenment and the age of reason, science is now god and true faith and dependence on the supernatural are regularly mocked and despised by the church.
By the way, for 1000 years, Catholicism was also the NORM in Christianity.
