[Church_of_Christ] Re: Creeds
Greetings Norman,
you commented: I am still trying to understand your definition of *creeds*.
Yes, we do seem to understand this word differently. First let me say that I"m not here to promote creeds or their use. But neither do I strongly oppose them as do many Baptist and CoC. I'm probably wrong in understanding you, but you seem to mix creed and doctrine. And you seem to think a creed is comprised of statements foreign to Scripture, which is not true. And while the definition of creed and doctrine are very simpler, I do see distinct differences. AS for me, a creed is the core beliefs of the Christian faith that cross denominational boundaries. Whereas a doctrine is the teachings, policies and principle position of a given group and will vary greatly from group to group. But a creed should fit all groups.
Can unwritten creeds exist?
I don't think so. When I think of a creed, I think of the Apostle's Creed or the Nicene Creed. IN fact, I believe Webster thinks the same.
Is the statement that we are commanded to meet and worship God every Sunday with the LS and a collection, a set of fundamental beliefs (a creed)?
I think of it as a church doctrine. AND, I'm quite sure that those who practice those commands don't think of it as a creed.
Kindly, Cole
