Ray's turn:
Cole, I will let Ed do the unpacking for you, but I still had a couple of comments and wanted your post included in my answer.
I know exactly what Ed means and I'm glad he said it. It opens a door for many discussions about RM foundations. Let me say first that you are absolutely right, Ed. I agree with your statement wholeheartedly. That IS why TC and the RM produced the "Declaration and Address". That IS why the RM went a different direction than the Reformation movement. Absolutely.
The problem is that TC and the RM were dead wrong about the nature of creeds, sectarianism, and the nature of the New Covenant. They were reacting to a real problem but they missed the real boat by miles. They developed their hermeneutics SPECIFICALLY by taking the opposing view of the Reformation. They created CENI because of this.
The Reformation movement began by asking "What does the bible actually SAY?"
The Restoration movement began by asking "Why is the reformation movement WRONG?"
The Restoration movement started in the middle instead of going back to square one. Their number one goal was to eliminate sectarianism. And their legacy is three major groups with more than 50 divisions in each one.
I don't think they pulled it off.
Ray
