[Church_of_Christ] Re: The essence of worship
Greetings Ray, ED replying
Ray: CENI is a theological acronym. It has nothing to do with daily communication or the ordinary use of 'command', 'example', and 'inference'. CENI is the process used in Restoration hermeneutics to determine what God requires of Christians under the authority of the NT. God's instructions and requirements for worship, for lifestyle, for spiritual growth are all determined from CENI. It is a method of establishing 'authorized practices'.
ED: Talk about convoluted! I suggest you get a couple of books on interpretation and read them. Get one that represents a conservative denomination (one that takes the Bible seriously) too. Then get back to me. I noticed that Scott replied with the names of several, both of the RM and denomination,
Ray: On top of that, the Restoration Movement founders concluded, and the various groups descended from it still conclude today, that violating a CENI results in damnation.
ED: If someone concludes that violating this or that that has been determined to be the meaning of scripture by the use of CENI and draws a conclusion that violating the scriptural statement results in damnation, it is not violating CENI that would result in damnation, it is violating the scripture and word of God. For instance: Mk 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. Applying CENI to this verse we find: 1) a statement (that establishes the same as a command). 2) inference (baptized or immersed infers a body of water in which to immerse; also saved infers one's sins are dealt with). 3) No example here.
Now, suppose someone takes this having used CENI to draw his conclusions and tells people that if they refuse to believe and be baptized they will be lost and damned. Did the word of God condemn those who reject Mk 16:16 or did CENI damn them?
