Ray: There is nothing in scripture that supports this statement. Not one word. The purpose of the gifts is revealed in I Cor 12:3. They are for building up (edifying, which results in maturing) the church.
ED: In regard to the gifts you proof text 12:3 actually disproves your statement: "no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Spirit". The only way we know that Jesus is Lord is by revelation. God's HS teaches us Jesus is Lord. God's revelation came thru the HS and the gifts provided both revelation itself and confirmation.
Edification? Of course! The more we learn of God, the more we are edified. To edify is to build up, to cause to grow; thus, "desire the sincere milk of the word that you may grow thereby." The more we learn the mind of Christ, the more we will be formed into his image. We are transformed "by the renewing of your mind". It is a work of being "led by the HS", thus we "set our minds on the things of the Spirit, not on the things of the flesh."
