Re: [Church_of_Christ] Questions on Marriage
Shawn,
I will agree with you concerning how a couple becomes married. I, personally, think it is when we "know" someone, so I will say that I don't think the liscense is a "binding" together of a "man and woman"...it is God who joins them together.
And yes! there are a lot of instances of relatives marrying in the O.T. and I'm not going to say that I know for a fact that it is wrong to marry family now. I know that sexual acts among immediate family members outside of a marriage is incest...but I don't profess to know about other relatives down the line like cousins, etc., but I know one thing for CERTAIN....If a marriage is not between a man and a woman it is not sanctioned by God.
BUT.....we are not talking about marriage liscense and homosexual "rights." We are talking, as Christians, about the ramifications of people who are going against "God's Will"....not mine...not yours, but God's.
This is what those...("ANY" not just homosexuals) going against God's will are saying....that is o.k. to do what we "feel" is o.k. If we think it is right in our eyes then it must be right in God's eyes...
but this is what God is saying...Proverbs 16:25...There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.
I did not say to Adam and Eve, " Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it." God did.
I did not say to Adam and Eve, "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." God did.
God did not say...ANYWHERE in scripture, "therefore shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave unto his husband and they shall be one flesh....it goes against nature!
God did not say...ANYWHERE in scripture, " therefore shall a woman leave her father and mother and cleave unto her wife and they shall become one flesh....it goes against nature!
God did not say....ANYWHERE in scripture, for man and man to multiply...nor for woman and woman to multiply...it goes against nature!
God did say, however, " Rom. 1:26...Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones.
God did also say, Rom. 1:27....In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
Shawn, how can you read the above scriptures and defend homosexual "rights" in any way. We are Christians! That means that we are to think as God thinks not as the "system" thinks. It doesn't matter what the government does...says or feels about homosexuality....if we don't take God's stance on it then we are no better than they are scripturally. We aren't talking about a citizens rights in a secular world...we are talking about God's defination of homosexuality.
I agree with Clay.
HOW can we wear the title Christian and not condemn the act of homosexuality? Not the person...but the act. How can we not condemn "sin" of any kind and not condemn the sinner, because we know that we all sin? I hear you and others seemingly nonchalent about sin. We "HAVE" to warn those outside of Christ about their sin. That is what we were put on this earth to do... to teach others and care enough about them to take them to Heaven with us.
We are to fear God and keep his commandments... Living a homosexual lifestyle, according to God, is going against his commnadments.
Even if we don't do anything about trying to convince them it is wrong....we still should condemn the act and not defend it at every turn.
You said....What is it about recognizing homosexual unions under family law that frightens us so much?
I can't speak for everyone...but I can tell you what I'm afraid of.
I'm afraid of our own "righteous indignation" that makes us angry because something "SEEMS UNFAIR OR UNREASONABLE."
I'm afraid of God's judgement of those living the gay lifestlye and on me if I don't defend His stance on it.
I'm afraid of this nation becoming another Sodom.
2 Cor. 7:8 Paul said to the Corinthians.... I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while- ...(9)...yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. (10)..Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
We, as Christians have to acknowledge that homosexuality is sin and try to "convert" their hearts as Paul did, even if we hurt them in the beginning. If they truly want to see Heaven they will give up that lifestyle, just as we will give up our sins of fornication, lying, cheating, etc. If we at least "TRY" to convict them...then our conscience will be clean. If we don't....I think we will answer to God.
I just think it's a terrible shame that one Christian has to try and convince another that we should not stand up for the homosexual and their agenda.
