Re: [Church_of_Christ] Questions on Marriage

The NT scriptures are silent as to how a couple becomes "married". The Hebrew scriptures provide an account the original coupling. These are followed by the process of marriage that occurred among the Hebrew people. So, I'm wondering what constitutes a "marriage" and at what moment does it occur that YHWH joins people together?
Since marriage licenses are government documents created to stipulate and protect certain rights and responsibilities under the umbrella of family law, how are those couples who choose not to seek a license and declare themselves married, any less married than those who have sought a license beyond the legal protections afforded by the license?
Ignoring the issue of gay marriage altogether..
I have a friend about to get married, and it's going to cost him something like $150 or so (I forget the exact amount) to get the license/handle the legalities (I forget the specifics also), and that made me suddenly question, perhaps for the first time, the need to get the government's permission to marry to begin with.
Considering the Biblical example, I don't see the State getting involved in marriage. Why should I, in a free country, have to ask permission of my government to get married?
Another person close to me thinks this line of thinking is tantamount to denying marriage altogether in favor of "shacking up", but I'm not opposed to a public declaration of commitment; I'm just questioning the need for governmental permission and taxation.
Thoughts?
