It was so well established that it took at least three church councils
to get people to think that perhaps it was what Jesus taught. Even
then, what is currently understood to be meant by "trinitarian" took
another twelve centuries to develop.

The church as a whole believed in modalism, not trinitarianism, until
the fifth century.
