One day, they dropped by and she wasn't home. that was OK with them, because they wanted to have a very important talk with me. you see, they KNEW that it was important that they tell me about how gawd hated straight, married people practicing "The Way of The Homosexual", you know, Oral and Anal, and all that stuff? I told them "I think you need to leave now, and not come back. Ever." And on top of that, they could never get it right on the date of "The End of The World". They should have stuck with 1914. |
| Posted: 30 Jun 2009 03:22 PM PDT I am soo related to your experience, I studied the bible with the JW from 1984 to 1989. I stopped attending to meetings during my first year of university. The elders tried to convince me not to get higher education. We started receiving the study as a family. During those years there was something in the back of my head telling me "this is BS". I never got baptized, my parents and my siblings did. My sister was disfellowshipped a few years ago. Today, my brother and my father are elders, you can imagine how broken my family got. If my sister goes home to visit them, she has to hide if a "brother" goes home. This is one of my biggest regrets in life, not having opened my mouth at the beginning to express my doubts. Why did I keep the questions? Maybe I was only a teenager. I don't know. Today I can't reason with my parents and brother. I think I was always a skeptic, I didn't know what the term meant. My first steps towards becoming an atheist were learning about the history of the JW's, then I started learning about the history of christianity, the catholic church, the bible and the islam. Then I started reading Harris and Co. and I discovered more people like me, then I realized I was an atheist and It was ok to be out and be vocal about it. I wish I had the balls before, I would have saved my family. I grew up in culture where even question the priest was a big sin. Critical thinking was not a tool available in my family. |

| Posted: 30 Jun 2009 11:08 AM PDT I agree with Mriana, the JW's are an extreme cult who made up their own version of christianity. You can't get much further from the truth than these loonies. They took a myth and rewrote it so they would be different from the other christian cults. Do they really believe they will be able to hang out with lions and tigers and they won't get eaten? They have a more twisted version of afterlife than the muslims. A little advice, atheists are all different, unlike christians. There is no atheist stereotype, I don't know where you got that. Be yourself. Also, what's wrong with skepticism? Are you possibly confusing it with cynicism? A little skeptisism might have kept you from falling for the watchtower b.s. Most of your town are jw's? I recommend you move far, far away from that psycho town. |
