Re: If it's a relationship, it sure is one-sided - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Thanks for sharing your story ... and your journey: doubts, questions and all.

The kind of guilt you are describing (for not praying, etc.) is a kind of religious hangover. Get wasted and you end up with a hangover.

Personally, I don't think giving up religion is the same as giving up spirituality. In my experience, they are two different things (sometimes opposites!), and a person can let go of one and actually deepen the other. What spirituality is to me is the connection between things, life below the surface. It doesn't have to involve any beliefs at all; certainly not creeds and rituals and swearing allegiance to beliefs someone else dreamed up.

Good luck on the next step ... whatever that is for you.

"Faith" is a belief in the ridiculous, despite what one's rational mind thinks about it.

"Faith" is believing in something regardless, even when the evidence is to the contrary.

Having "Faith" in one's god is necessary, because if there were evidence for a god, one wouldn't need faith at all.

"Trust" keerliz, is whole 'nother ballgame.
Trust is earned or gained from experience.

No one can 'trust' god, because no one has interacted with god, except in their own minds.

keerliz

Enlightening.

Enlightening?

Hardly -- you jumped into our little rodeo as a blockhead with preconceived notions and after a minuscule amount of time you bailed as a blockhead still wallowing in your massive christian delusions.

just relax and take your time, this is a long thought out process, leaving a belief isn't easy. all of us has our stories and we like to hear them, some like me who's deconversion involved a ex-stepfather who claimed up and down he was a "christian", a bout with depression, and then a job with the religious right. (i'm never going back there to work ever, i may have to buy something for my mom at the gift giving season) and then some who just never believed in the first place. i wish you the best in your new life, and take care of yourself, don't let anyone sway you in your new "faith"

Adam and Eve sinned. Because of their sin (and because they were the only copulating...

Oh man. I didn't know keerliz started off by vomiting up myths as ultimate truth, to support her warped world-view -- cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.

You know there seems to be something of a paradox with this silly A&E myth.

Christians invariably profess the Garden of Eden to be perfect. One can only presume that if it was perfect then there was no sin.

Christians readily exclaim that sin entered the world after A&E partook of the fruit which let evil take a foothold of our world. Either there was sin in the world and the garden was not perfect or the garden was perfect and there was no sin -- you can't have it both ways.

If there was no sin before A&E partook of the fruit, then how is god justified in punishing (severe punishment considering the minor infraction; not to mention letting evil take a foothold on humanity, with egregious, vile suffering that punishes ALL of humanity, that had nothing to do with the supposed fall) an innocent couple who were NOT sinful and did NOT know that what the were doing was bad or good, because they did not possess the knowledge, nor did they know the severity of the punishment which was subsequently handed down.

And don't let me get started on why god created an evil talking snake before evil ever entered the world. How ridiculous. And talking snakes -- what kind of lunatic believes this sh*t?

This is what keerliz gets when she uses myths to fabricate her unreal world-view -- silly christian, myths are for ignorant superstitious people, with limited intellectual resources, who tried explaining the world around them.

States should levy taxes to maintain a civil society and infrastructure; the federal government should tax states to maintain the 'common wealth'.

If a failed state doesn't create value, and it goes into crisis, then the citizens should tar-and-feather their incompetent state politicians, and elect ones capable of managing their state's business affairs.

Stealing from one state's working class, in order to off-set the failure or incompetence of another state, is playing Robin Hood - socialism.

I reject the notion of being fleeced by the 'federation'; I have no problem supporting my state, and building 'value' in the state I live.

I don't believe 'any' political party is entirely 'free' of those who want to regulate citizen rights to include abortion rights. There are religious based control-freaks on both sides of the political spectrum.

NSA,
The reason that I eventually bailed from Christianity is that I was doing all the work and Jesus wasn't doing a damn thing. So much for a "relationship with Jesus," eh?

It took me a long time to realize that this Jesus person just doesn't exist.

Leading a reason-based life is so much better than that empty, one-sided faith-based life.

Congratulations!

I would recommend you put Eric Maisel's 'The Atheist's Way' on your reading list. It is a great book that can really help give perspective to living a life of non-belief that is full and rich.

Hello Not Sure Anymore,

That was a great post. Hey, here you won't have any one-sided conversations, relationships, etc. We know what you are feeling and going through. Congratulations for being true to what you know is true about the idea of god.

Keep moving forward and yes it is kind of scary but it's worth it.

Take care and welcome.

Dear " not sure anymore,
You said = " funny thing is once you " wake up " it's hard to go back to sleep ".
Yes that's true, it's like once you learn math, you cannot UN-LEARN it. You need a support group of others who are going thru what you have been going thru......so that you can see that you are among MILLIONS of people who have come to the conclusion that god does not exist, never has, never will. Support can come in the form of a book (s) or joining a group of agnostics/ atheists, or just by reading the many, many testimonials on this site. There is a grid to the extreme right, it has many month/ year choices. Just click on one, choose the topic, and read away. As far as a book goes, I pretty much recommend " The God Delusion " by Richard Dawkins. If you want to see if there is an atheist or agnostic group near you , then click onto meetup.org , and go from there ! Good Luck....you ARE NOT alone.....happy days of truth and freedom are ahead !

Matt,
you had it all and you gave it away for god. Many people have done the same. Don't feel bad. It's a common mistake made with the best of intentions. You sound like you're still young. Most of your life has yet to come.
Do you have any kids?
Is the woman you love still in love with you?
You see where this is leading.
You made a five year mistake that ended up in a marriage to which you don't belong.
The solution is simple my friend.
Tell your wife the truth.
Pack your bags and move to the place you always dreamed of.
Leave it all behind.
In this day and age no stigmas will follow you. It's perfectly acceptable to be divorced. If the woman you loved is no longer interested, hey, there are plenty more available. You can fall in love again. If you are living the life you desire friends will abound!
If your wife refuses to cooperate that is her problem. One sided relationships never work in the long run. That is why we have divorce. People often make errors in judgment when it comes to marriage.
It's best for you and in the long run, your wife too. It will give her the opportunity to find someone who loves her. Besides, maybe she feels the same too.

Only children can complicate this solution and that is not set in stone.
Regardless of ones beliefs, we only live this life once. No need to waste it.
Happiness comes to those who seek it.
This is your opportunity to live your dreams.
Just remember, next time you're munching magical shrookies, be careful who you listen to. Them sillysibes is powerful stuff! It was most likely the psychedelics that caused your intense dreams anyway.
Good luck Matt.

Letting go of God is a process, and for some people it takes years, others it is instant. When you have lived your whole life thinking that the invisible bully has his eye on you, it can take a while be rid of that paranoia. I wish you well, keep reading, keep your mind open, and keep thinking!
