Re: Open-mindedness?- ExChristian.Net - Articles

I have seen so many Christian trolls come through this web site, accusing us of being "closed minded" to god. That's why I linked this video, to make sure that we know and proclaim who is REALLY open-minded and who is close-minded.

I think I love you. At least I love the way you express yourself. This was so insightful (and inciteful).

Mark Twain was a very wise man.

Thanks Larry. That is a good analogy. I've never thought of it that way.

I especially like your statement: "For 'free market' substitute 'evolution.'"

Evolution gave us empathy, since social animals like us that possess empathy tend to survive better as a group. This empathy allows us to understand other people's joy and pain.

Evolution also gave us physical sensation receptors, since animals that can feel pain tend to avoid situations that would take them out of the gene pool, and certain positive sensation increase our desire to reproduce. From this we can recognize what hurts, and what feels good.

Evolution also gave us a brain that has emotional responses to the physical stimuli, since it is our reaction to things in the real world that keeps us alive and reproducing. Tie this in with empathy, and we can recognize and relate to emotional responses in others. We can in essence feel the pain of others, and also feel a desire to minimize it.

These things are all that is necessary to drive the natural "Moral System" as you call it. These and some other "gifts" from evolution allow us to see what increases happiness and what decreases pain for ourselves and those around us. You are right in that it is complicated, but we have all the necessary tools to figure it out as we go along.

As Ryan Scott above said: "No religion required."

Thanks for the post. Excellent stuff.

Exactly. I'm an atheist and I *do* do what I want. Which is, be nice to people. My momma taught me that, and society taught me that. And it works not only to other people's benefit, but mine. No religion required.
