Subject: [FamilyofGod] A Disciple Is...
A Disciple Is...
Jesus called out to them, "Come, be my disciples, and I will show you how to fish for people!" And they left their nets at once and went with him. -- Matthew 4:18
Jesus, as usual, eloquently and succinctly explains to those He called to follow Him what following Him meant: fishing for people.
Jesus did not say 'study about Me' or 'believe about Me'.
He said to follow Him and learn from Him how to relate to people so to live the supernatural life of being a follower (disciple) of Jesus.
The ENTIRE plan of God's redemption of humankind is about people, not principles. God so loved people that He gave His most precious gift - Jesus - in order to provide not only a reconciled relationship with Himself, but also a supernaturally empowered life on earth that enabled each person who believed on Jesus (as Savior and LORD) to interact successfully with people.
Jesus did not say, 'Ok, now that you are My disciples, to be enabled you have to spend much time studying the Scriptures.' Although knowing what God has said in His Holy Scriptures is vitally important to living a life that honors God, it is not what enables us.
Jesus said simply, 'Follow Me'. 'Learn from Me'. 'I will show you how to live and interact in a way that will honor God.'
God Himself said repeatedly to listen to Jesus, His Son. Jesus Himself said that He only said what He heard God say, and did what He saw God do. He was fully surrendered to God's plans and purposes for Him, regardless of how painful it might be at times.
Where are we? How do we fit into Jesus' command to follow Him?
Are we disciples, living our lives in order that we may honor God and touch people, as Jesus commanded and did?
Or are we merely students, studying about Jesus but rarely, if ever, personalizing His commands and examples?
What is our purpose for being a Christian?
Simply eternal life?
Or being so transparent within ourselves (and our souls) with God that His 'rivers of living water' are flowing through us, bringing healing, wholeness and refreshment to all whose lives we touch?
Remember, Jesus gave us the 'report card' definition in Matthew 25.
Are we making the grade as disciples?
If not, what can we do to improve?
Step One: get out your Bibles and read through the Gospels repeatedly, taking notes as to how Jesus interacted with people, showing them mercy and the immense love of God so that they might be healed (spiritually and physically / emotionally / mentally).
Step Two: spend much time alone with God, repenting for our selfishness and failure to see things through His eyes -- an eternal perspective -- and seek to live as Jesus did.
Step Three: seek to live to honor God in thought, word, emotion and behavior and to be available to meet the needs of others as God's Holy Spirit moves you to act.
Step Four: ask God to help you truly be a disciple of Jesus.
If you are a Christian, it is what you are all about.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. (2 Corinthians 13:14)
