Hi Shelley
I believe that many brethren miss the point of what has been taught to us in the Word. We are not expected to "work" on ourselves - that task belongs to God. What we are expected to do is to submit or surrender our wills to God. This has to be done on at least a daily basis, and is not an easy thing to accomplish as we are fighting against the "flesh", which is our enemy. However, when we sincerely submit ourselves to God on an ongoing basis, He fights the fight for us.
In 1 Samuel 17:47b, David declares "For the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hand."
Once we submit to the will of God, He takes over the battle. All we have to do is to continue submitting to His will. In other words, do not concentrate on the "things of this world". Rather prayerfully concentrate on submitting to the Lord's will and the victory shall be given to you.
Blessings
Craig
