Come Follow Me

Mark 1:17
"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
There is a song we sing at my small group called Come Follow Me. In the refrain it says, "Leave all behind and follow me." As my wife, Michelle, and I prepare to make the move from Arizona to Iowa to a much smaller home, we find ourselves getting rid of many possessions. As we were talking about this last week, Michelle mentioned this song. Hurray for us, we are living the gospel, right? Oh, if it were only that easy! Michelle's mention of this song led to further discussion. Something told us that the list of things Jesus is calling us to leave behind probably doesn't include a dining room set, couch and pool table.
Both Michelle and I have fractured relationships within our families to which we are returning. I think Jesus is calling us to leave behind any prejudices, bitterness or unforgiveness that would hinder the healing of these relationships.
I am rejoining the Iowa division of the corporation that my brother and uncle have been managing for the past 24 years. I need to leave behind the desire for control along with my pride and find a way to fit in, contribute and bring the light of Christ to our workplace.
Michelle is leaving behind her business, her clients and many friends. Selfishness and self-centeredness on my part must be left behind to make time for her to make her transition easier.
By the grace of God my mother is not only making the move with us but was blessed to purchase a home next door to ours. Again, I am called to leave behind impatience and selfishness so I can be available to help her adjust and find peace.
As we move into a new town, neighborhood and church we are called to leave behind any sloth, laziness or procrastination that would prevent us from reaching out to the new faces that God places before us.
TAKE THE CHALLENGE: Whether you are moving to a different state or simply moving into a new day, what is Jesus calling you to leave behind?
