Not So Fast
Read Ahead: Proverbs 20:5-7
Counsel in a man's heart is deep water; but a man of understanding draws it up. Proverbs 20:5, HCSB
Discernment is the ability to see past the surface of things. Those who are discerning have sharp insight that allows them to see through people who are trying to deceive or mislead them.
It's unfortunately true--people are out there looking to take advantage of you. This doesn't mean you need to become hardhearted and cynical, always suspecting that everyone is out to get you. At the same time, though, it's vitally important that you're not gullible enough to be taken in by the schemes of cunning people.
If someone is asking you to do something you know is wrong, don't be swayed--no matter how convincing the argument or how appealing the person is. Always weigh what others tell you against God's Word, and match their arguments up with biblical principles you know are true. When in doubt, seek the advice of a Christian you respect.
But above all, trust God to guide you. He sees what people plot in their hearts, and he can protect you. He has given you his Holy Spirit to alert you to things that are false. If you have any doubt at all about someone's motives, guard your heart and take your concerns to God.
Are people asking you to do something you're not sure about? Don't proceed until God has given you the assurance that it's okay.
What are the fine lines between being guarded and being gullible?
