1. WARSHIPS, MISSILES, AND A GOD WHO IS HIGHER!
"No king is saved by the multitude of an army; a mighty man is not delivered by great strength; Trust in a horse for salvation is a lie, and by its valor none will be delivered. Behold, the eye of YHVH is on those who fear Him, on those who yearn for His lovingkindness." (Psalm 33:16-18).
"It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever." (Psalm 44:3, 8 NIV).
" Israel 's army needs faith in God more than tanks" --Major General Yair Naveh, IDF Deputy Chief of Staff (See Below).
This past week two Iranian warships, were allowed by Egypt 's military administered interim government to transit the Suez Canal , the first Iranian vessels to do so since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The ships proceeded on to Syria 's Latakia seaport where they arrived on Thursday. Two days later an agreement was signed by the commanders of both navies stating that "The two parties will cooperate with each other in training issues and the exchange of personnel." An Iranian naval commander was quoted as saying, "The message of the ships is to announce the peace and friendship to Islamic countries and the region and attempt to strengthen relations between the countries." Analysts see the agreement as further strengthening ties between the two countries, both hostile to Israel , as Iran seeks to bolster its image as a regional force to reckon with, in the midst of all the present upheaval in Middle Eastern states. Transit through the canal is also seen as an overture towards Egypt . Ties have been cut for decades because Egypt was seen as a close ally with Washington as well as under Mubarak honoring the treaty with Israel . Iran is now seen as welcoming the fall of Mubarak as an indication that Washington's influence in the Middle East is waning ("Iran and Syria agree on Military training cooperation": (Reuters) HAARETZ.com,26 Feb 11). Meanwhile, Russia yesterday divulged that a contract made in 2007 (and strongly opposed by both Israel and the US when disclosed in 2010) to send Syria 72 cruise anti-ship missiles has been finalized and is now in "implementation stage". These missiles are likely meant to arm two coastal defense systems, most of the components of which it is believed Russia has already supplied. From the start, Israel has been concerned that such advanced weapons might end up (as has happened in the past) in the hands of the Shiite Hezbollah movement in Lebanon . The revelation came as a surprise to the West, which had speculated that with the turmoil in North Africa and the Middle East , the deal had been annulled.
With such unsettling news, it was heartening to spot the following headline in the on-line 21 February 2011 HAARETZ.com: "IDF deputy chief: Israel 's army needs faith in God more than tanks." To quote the lead sentence of the article, "The events currently shaking the Arab world 'were ordained from above' by a guiding hand, Israel Defense Forces Deputy Chief of Staff Yair Naveh said on Sunday. Naveh added that the Israeli army needs faith in God now more than its supply of planes and tanks." The Major General made the remarks to two rabbis visiting the chief military rabbi at the Tzrifin military base. The article referencing another news source Arutz-7, says that "Naveh called Israel an island of calm in the storm of the Middle East , turmoil that had not been foreseen by intelligence officials despite their good work. 'But it was ordained from above,' he said, 'and we don't know where it will lead, but it's clear to us that there is a hand from above.'" (Emphases ours).
PLEASE PRAY:
*That Israel would be guarded (Psalm 121) as "sharks" are beginning to proliferate and circle off of her coasts.that she will be protected from "arrows that fly by day" (Psalm 21:5) which are beginning to be multiplied in the batteries of her nearby enemies.
*That God would give integrity and strategy to Israel 's new military Chief of Staff Benny Gantz, to her Minister of Defense Ehud Barak, and to all of her military--but that these leaders would realize that in the end, He is Israel 's Defense.
*For Deputy Chief of Staff Ya'ir. His name Ya'ir means "to light up, illuminate, ignite, explain." Pray that he would have special "illumination" of the words which he spoke last week-that He would believe them, and besides speaking them to religious rabbis, that he will "ignite" them into the understanding and trust of his "secular" officers and men as well.
2. A STRENGTHENING ALLIANCE WITH POLAND .
This past week a delegation from Poland arrived in Israel to officially launch a joint governmental forum between the two countries. The visitors included Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, plus Polish ministers of defense, education, culture health and environmental protection, and the Secretary of State for Special Services. These cabinet members met with their Israeli counterparts for two days. During that time a number of cooperative agreements were signed, including in the areas of defense, health, environment education and culture. Before now, Israel had only conducted such high-level dialogues with Germany and Italy . Another such joint ministerial meeting is planned in Warsaw next year.
In recent years, Poland has come to be seen as one Israel 's most enthusiastic supporters-it was they who led opposition to the UN Durban II conference on racism, and to the Goldstone report on the "Cast Lead" operation in Gaza . And conversely, Poland now sees Israel as among its staunchest supporters. For centuries Poland was homeland to huge segments of European Jewry. Yet it was in this land that Jews faced time and again persecution and pogroms, often at the hands of neighbors who overran its borders. And it was in Poland that anti-Semitism reached its most dreadful height when the Nazis chose this conquered land as the center-place for their "Final Solution", establishing six extermination camps in which some 3.5 million Jews were murdered. Yet the New Poland has sought to distance itself from that past.a past in which they feel much was done against their will, a past in which they themselves were subject to much persecution. In an interview this week, Foreign Minister Sikorski remarked, "In Poland, the term 'solidarity' has great significance. We identify profoundly with your pain, as we too have lived in condition of occupation, of loss of statehood and under the threat of cultural and Physical annihilation. So we know how precious it is to have your own state to express your interests" ("Polish FM to Haaretz: Nazi Germany carried out the Holocaust against our will": HAARETZ.com, 27 Feb 11). The Polish PM spoke of the full support his country has for Israel , and promised to stand by her when Poland assumes the rotating presidency of the European Union later this year. In a joint press conference with Israel 's PM Benyamin Netanyahu he said, " Israel has the right to expect from the international community to have full support [with respect to] safety, security and peace in this region. You can count on our cooperation and support, dear friend." And Netanyahu responded, "I want to tell you, my friend Donald, Jewish history and Polish history will forever be connected with one another,. The chapters of our past - both the triumphs and the tragedies - cannot be rewritten. But the future is up to us, and I have no doubt that both of us are committed to ensuring that our common future is one of security, of hope, of prosperity and of peace."
PLEASE PRAY:
*For the redemptive purposes of God over Poland and Israel come to fruition.
*That the friendship between the two countries would be integrally strengthened in deep and lasting ways.
*That God will raise up godly ones of integrity in both of these countries in the areas of society reflected by these ministers and the agreements they signed-Government, Defense, Education, Health and Environmental Protection and Culture. Pray that these will bring honor in their positionings in their own land, and in their relations to their counterparts in Israel and Poland .
3. TABITHA IN JAFFA .
A committee of Tel Aviv's municipality responsible for supplying or changing names and commemoration recently approved eight new names for the city neighborhoods. One of these neighborhoods lies in old Jaffa (Biblical: Joppa) and, very unusual for Israel , it has been decided that it be recommended to be named for a figure in the New Testament, Tabitha. The name is Aramaic (the Greek form is Dorcas), and means 'gazelle' or 'doe'. Tabitha's story is related in Acts 9:36-42. She was evidently a gifted seamstress, and is called a "disciple.full of good works and charitable deeds." But she became sick and died. Peter, living in the town of Lod , was sent for. After arriving, he put all the people out, knelt down and prayed, "And turning to the body he said, 'Tabitha, Arise!' And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. Then he gave her his hand and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed on the Lord."
It is interesting that Tabitha is replacing the neighborhood's older name Abu Kabir, related to the name El-Kebir. When Egypt briefly conquered the Land of Israel from the Ottoman Turks in 1831, they uprooted an Egyptian village Tel el-Kebir and literally transplanted it as a settlement in this area in Jaffa . El-Kebir, meaning, "The Great" is the 37th of the 99 names for the Muslim deity mentioned in the Koran.
PLEASE PRAY:
*For life from the dead in this neighborhood of Tel Aviv.
*For signs and wonders to take place in the name of Yeshua (Hebrew)/Ya'suah (Arabic) in this part of Tel Aviv. Pray that, as in ancient times, these wonders will be known throughout all of Jaffa and many will believe in the Lord.
* For a new "changing of names" to that of the Most High God! Muslims call "great" a god who teaches his followers the falsehood that a divine covenant of life passed through Ishmael rather than Isaac. Pray for revelation in this neighborhood amongst Muslim people of a God who is Greater.whose Son was born of the seed of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob on behalf of the whole world!
*For Women to be awakened to their place in the Kingdom of God in Israel as "disciples, full of good works and charitable deeds"-that they be granted "Hinds' feet" (Tabitha means 'gazelle'!) to rise and do exploits for God!
THIS WEEK'S TORAH PORTION:
From ancient times there has been a weekly portion (Parashah) from the first five books of Moses (The Torah) and an ending (Haftarah) from the Prophets read on the Sabbath in synagogues around the world. This portion is given a Hebrew name drawn from the opening words of the Torah passage. An illustration of this practice appears to have been recorded in Luke 4:16 where Yeshua (Jesus) arrived in the synagogue in Nazareth and was asked to read the portion (Isaiah 61) from the Prophets. We have found that in perusing these weekly readings, not only are we provided opportunity to identify in the context of God's Word with millions of Jewish people around the world, but very often the Holy Spirit will illumine specific passages pertinent that week in our intercession for the Land and people of Israel . All texts are those of English translations of the Scriptures.
The readings for this week are called P'kudei-Inventory:
TORAH: Exodus 38:21-40:38
HAFTARAH: I Kings 7:53-8:21
*THIS TORAH PORTION ends with the completion of the work of the Tabernacle (39:32), its erection (40:17), and the coming of the manifest Presence of the LORD to fill it with His Glory-to dwell among His people in their travel to Canaan . Similarly, the Haftarah ends with the Ark of the Covenant being brought up to the new Temple from the City of David, being placed in its inner court-and with the cloud of God's glory filling the House of the LORD (I Kings 8:11). PLEASE PRAY for an awakened longing in Israel for the Presence of the LORD to return to His Land. Pray for grace among us as Believers in preparing the way for His Glory. And pray for revelation among Israelis that preceding Messiah's physical return to the Land, it is possible for His glorious Spirit to take up residence within the individual hearts of all of His people-to commune with them and encourage them, and to lead, even as did the cloud and the fire of His presence in the wilderness.
"Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land" (Psalm 85:9).
" 'For I,' says the LORD, 'will be a wall of fire all around her [i.e. Jerusalem ], and I will be the glory in her midst'" (Zechariah 2:5).
*IN THE HAFTARAH, I Kings 8:8 takes care to point out that in Solomon's Temple, the poles used to transport the Ark of the Covenant were so prominent that they extended out of the Inner Sanctuary of the Temple so as to be visible in the Holy Place. The LORD's instructions in the Torah for carrying the Ark had evidently been viewed as 'lesser details' by David when he sought to bring it up to Jerusalem from Kiryat Yearim (II Samuel 6:3), resulting in the death of one of his men when the ox pulling the cart stumbled. PLEASE PRAY that we be attentive to the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27)-realizing that details are just as critically important as what seem to be the 'big pictures.'
Please keep Paul Gray in your prayers tomorrow. We're looking to hear a good report from the Lord!
Monday, I have my next CT Scan. This CT scan is to see if my cancer has metastasized outside of my abdomen. If it hasn't, I am cleared to have surgery at Wake Forest University on April 4th. If it has, then we will have to start working on plan B. The last week was pretty tough. I spent Wednesday and Thursday in out patient care at Swedish. It appears I got an intestinal infection from the chemotherapy. I lost 4 lbs in a couple days from dehydration. So I spent Wednesday and Thursday getting IV fluids and pain killers at Swedish.
I will get the results of the CT scan on Wednesday when I have my next appointment with Dr. Gold. I may also have hopefully my last chemotherapy before surgery. If all goes as hoped for, after chemotherapy my next challenge will be to exercise 6 days a week until surgery to get my heart in shape to handle a potentially all day surgery.
I am feeling much better day and I am feeling pretty positive. Karen has been very supportive during this last week and I am greatly appreciative. I am also appreciative of Alice who is Dr. Gold's nurse and assistant who as always goes beyond the call of duty to be supportive. Finally, I also thankful for our many supportive friends at Faith United Methodist who remember us in their prayers and are there when we need them.
My thought for the day is Matthew 6:34
'So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today.
DAILY:
Hi Mary

Would you please put my husband back on the prayer list daily? He is now cancer free but the chemo and radiation has made it necessary to have an ostomy bag and also kidney stents as the ureter is burned up. He battles dehydration and have spent a lot of time in hospital. I have had to learn to give him a daily shot of octreotide to slow the bowel process down and now they want to put in a fistula to prepare for future dialysisi. In my spirit, I do not sense dialysis needed but we need Divine wisdom in steps to take. He says he has peace about going to Heaven but is not a church goer and will not stop his daily beer which adds to dehydration. I have surrendered his choices over and over to Jesus so many times and just need complete trust in the Lord. We will be married 41 yrs in June and he will be 65 in Sept--which kicks us out of the medical system and into Medicare. Please lift us daily--that he will not be dehydrated, he will put out normal urine, he will put on weight---was 235 in 2006 when diagnosed with cancer and now is 163. He retired in 1999 from a manager position with huge corporation and now we are barely making ends meet with all the medical expense and his free lance business not bringing much income in. Sorry for rambling here---we just need a MIRACLE again--the fact he is still alive is a miracle in itself but we are not seeing victory in this one yet. I am losing weight and stress is attacking my body also and I am the only caregiver here. Our boys are married and in different states. Thank you and Jay for your faithfulness and prayers.
