[Church_of_Christ] Re: The essence of worship

Greetings Ray, ED responding,

Ray: In your recent response to Clay on an issue, you presented the following statement: "You tell me I must have commands for each specific thing I copy. I don't believe God has to reveal His will that way; that examples will do." There is our simple difference.  It is also the difference between us on the issue of spiritual gifts. I would enjoy dialoguing with you on them, but I already know this will be the bottom line. I do not recognize CENI at all, and I do not believe Acts 8 is an EXAMPLE. Examples demonstrate things that were taught previously. And Jesus no where taught, nor did the prophets, that the apostles hands would be the means by which the Holy Spirit's gifts were passed on. Perhaps you would find my in-depth answers to your points interesting, but an actual dialogue will come down to disagreement on the authority of examples, especially Acts 8.

ED: You do not recognize CENI at all? Interesting! I have found that others who have made the same statements end up recognizing it after all, they just didn't know it. They oppose something they thought was one thing and came to understand it isn't what they thought it was! The reason I suspect this is that CENI is nothing more than the normal way humans communicate! It is no secret formula and mysterious theorem. It is ridiculed and sneered at and then used in every day dialogue.

By the waythe Acts 8 record actually falls under the category of "command", as in command/statement. It is an example only in the sense that it is recorded history. It is command/statement because it records statements that informative about the matter at hand - how the HS was conferred on another. It saddens me to see how much lack of knowledge there is on this simple element of everyday communication. Suppose you tune into a DYI or HGTV program and they are revealing information on how to add a room or landscape a section of yard. During the process there will be statements. "This is what we did . . . "(statement, same as command; like for instance - "the Lord our God is one."). There are inferences, "We nailed the plywood to this joist" (inference: something was used to nail: hammer, nail gun, rock?). "When you do this be sure you glue it like we have" (example). Pretty simple stuff. Think - how would you be able to communicate without CENI?
