[Church_of_Christ] Re: Spiritual gifts
Greetings Ray, ED
ED before: Concerning the third method, that of earnestly desiring and/or praying >for spiritual gifts, strictly speaking, I do not know of any instance >in which we have a record of this actually happening. We only have the >record of apostolic instruction for doing so.
Ray: When did examples become God? Instruction is more important and a higher level of authority than example. Plus, example has no authority in matters where there is no instruction. Here is a classic example of hermeneutic difference and foundational error causing people to miss God entirely.
ED: Acts 8 is INSTRUCTION. God reveals his will historically, that is, within the context of history. As a consequence it is even of greater value than abstract statements. "All scripture . . . is profitable for teaching . . . for instruction in righteousness . . ."; not simply the parts you choose. And don't try to tell me this was only OT, I know better! In 1 Tim Paul quotes OT and NT side by side as authority; one no less than the other! (5:17, 18). Moreover he told the Thess folks that they shoule read his letters not as "the word of men" but as the "word of God" (1 Th 2:13). Peter knew too (2 Peter 3:15, 16). James too (Jm 1:21).
