Re: Open-mindedness?- ExChristian.Net - Articles Posted: 01 Sep 2009 06:34 PM PDT I couldn't see more than one minute of the video (it would get stuck in that little revolving dot)...but it seemed well done and fascinating. I'm constantly amazed at the trolls who come to this site wanting to bait us with their desire to have an open conversation while presenting a closed mind. It's as if some nazi sympathizer would tell me that, yes, there were some bad things done during the 2nd WW, and millions were exterminated, but there is also another side to all that. The Nazis were extremely well organized and efficient. Many scientific experiments were carried out in the concentration camps, and a whole nation that had felt degraded after the 1st WW was able to rise and succeed, for a limited time, in spreading its point of view. I would be narrow and close-minded to not want to consider the Nazi point of view. Well, my open-minded believer/preacher/praying mantis, I will proudly keep my narrow point of view because I trust my own thinking, my ability to reason, my bull-shit detector much more than your misty-eyed salvation-obssessed blather. I am saddened that those believers are wasting so much time preaching and stuck in their blind faith, when they should be using their brain to think things through...to arrive at conclusions based on tough reasoning and challenging every belief in their canon. |

Re: Thank you Jim Bob Duggar! - Testimonies of Ex-Christians Posted: 01 Sep 2009 03:55 PM PDT I would like to make a counter-suggestion. Search the internet for information regarding those cadavers who had their skull-cap sawed off, their brain removed, weighed, and then stuffed back in their brain cavity, and who have then been shipped off to the mortician, only to have come back from the "other side" to tell someone about it. In other words, search the internet for a medically documented case of a cadaver who has come back to life. This should be no problem at all, and in fact, an every day occurence, if the "soul"("personality") presumably exists *independently* of the physical body. *Note: For what it's worth, here is my prediction: You will NOT find any such documented cases. Why?... because "near death" is not "dead", and "dead" people don't come back to life, because dead is dead, and there is no such thing as a "soul". It is the simplist, most logical explanation(see Occam's Razor), and it is where most of the available evidence points. No, it is not the most comforting explanation in the world, but unfortunately, the one that is most likely true. |
Re: Thank you Jim Bob Duggar! - Testimonies of Ex-Christians Posted: 01 Sep 2009 01:37 PM PDT Pam, "NEAR death" is not quite the same thing as "DEATH", is it? Now if you happen to hear about someone being dead for '3' days and then coming back to life, with an afterlife story, please let me know ASAP. 1. NDE's assume one has a 'soul', which we have no credible evidence for; yet such evidence has been sought throughout history for this "soul thingy". 2. NDE's assume that this 'soul' understands the physical body is dying and decides independently of your physical brain, to make a quick getaway (tire screech sound-bite here). 3. If the soul has then made it's escape, and had been an integral part of what makes you, "YOU", then how could doctors bring your now soul-devoid body, back to life again? It's a nice hope to hold out for, but I sure wouldn't count on it being part of reality. Of course, that is MY opinion on the matter and I'm sure you'll hear others here to...LOL ATF ( Who doesn't 'deny' the possibility, but just like with the gods, sees no evidence for these souls [YET?] ) |
Re: Thank you Jim Bob Duggar! - Testimonies of Ex-Christians Posted: 01 Sep 2009 01:35 PM PDT Jessica: "You are a fool to say the least." *cough* Matthew 5:22. *cough* " I hope you got saved as a girl because if not you sure know where you are headed." No, I did not "get saved" as a girl. I am 52 years old and have never uttered the Sinner's Prayer. I knew that Christianity was nonsense as soon as I was old enough to read the Bible... 46 years ago. As for hell -- A place that to Me is merely an ugly and manipulative fiction concocted by power-mad religious leaders -- I would much rather go there than worship Biblegod, the alleged creator of the place. "I pitty your children growing up in your home." You mean, My self-employed, adult daughter? " I would not want to live with a bitter, cynical, arogant feminist witch who probably treats your husband like a piece of garbage." Ex-husband, and good riddance. And you say 'bitter, cynical, arrogant feminist witch' like it's a bad thing. :-D "All you are doing is laying a path for children who despise you as much as you despise God." Au contraire... My daughter and I are on very good terms indeed. She did, however, inherit My antipathy towards Christianity. |
Re: Thank you Jim Bob Duggar! - Testimonies of Ex-Christians Posted: 01 Sep 2009 12:24 PM PDT Pam, I've had experiences similar to NDEs, and quite frankly - there was no 'other side', just my perceptive mental extension of what is, without inhibition. My mental projection is not necessarily (and most likely not) going to be the same as another persons' for a variety of reasons; however, among those who have had such experiences, they will likely recall similar traits like the non-existence of mental inhibition. I'll add that flat-lining doesn't suggest death. Someone who flat-lines on an electrocardiogram, is one whose pulse has stopped - however, such a person may still have 'brain activity'; not dead. People who flat-line by means of cardiac arrest, and have projected memory or thoughts, are those who are said to have NDEs, but there is no 'other side', it's all on 'this side' - the only side, that still houses their brain activity. Flat lining on an electroencephalogram describes the initiation of brain death. Those who are declared 'brain dead' do not come back to speak about anything. The medical standard for death is based on a cardiac standard. The legal standard for death is based on a neural standard. Two different standards for two entirely different purposes; medical personnel use the lower standard, in order to most expeditiously identify and respond to a fatal health condition. Legal professionals use the greater brain death standard, in order to most expeditiously exercise legal instruments, etc. The brain death standard suggests a real 'death', or 'absence' of such a person's conscious presence. So, if someone is looking for a story of the 'other side' - they need to find someone who is brain dead and get them to elaborate on their most intellectually braid dead understanding of the 'other side' (sarcasm). |
Re: I don't know what I am yet, but I know I'm no longer a Christian - Testimonies of Ex-Christians Posted: 01 Sep 2009 11:40 AM PDT Just wanted to let you know that I have 21 and 18 year old children that I have raised without organized religion. Although, they are still young adults, they are wonderful people. They are respectful, loving, compassionate and hard-working. Unfortunately, many religions have convinced people that they have some corner on goodness. I will admit that I have not been able to use those fear tactics to get them to behave. Nor have I been able to make death seem not so bad by reassuring them that there is a heaven. What I have done is let them know that I trust them to be the best person that they can be. I have told them what I think is right or wrong. I have also asked them what they think and feel. And when they have questioned why they need to be upstanding when others are not, I would usually present them with this challenge: You need to decide what kind of person you want to be. Do not concern yourself with the behavior of others. What do you want to be? Although, it is not always easy most kids really want to be loving, honest and kind. Just remember, one group does not own these ideals. No matter how you go with or without religion, I think your kids will do great, because they have you. |
