[Church_of_Christ] Re: Are we misunderstanding the scriptures?
Greetings Norman & Clay, ED here
Norman said to Ed: My faith was strengthened when I learned the truth. I was taught that we were commanded to worship every Sunday and take the LS and I did that and other things that were taught as laws of God for those who wanted to go to Heaven. I could not measure up to that standard and I was weak and afraid of my salvation. . . .
ED: When the grace of God is ignored and a salvation of works is substituted, it is no wonder you were unhappy and troubled with being unable to measure up. None of us measure up! Jesus is our Advocate! He keeps us clean. We walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh. Fear is cast away and confidence in him takes its place. But walking in the light I look forward to assembling and praising God. I rejoice to commune with the Lord in the LS. I am eager to learn his will and in learning discover that there were some Jewish Christians that were abandoning the faith and the characteristic the ecidenced this was their failure to assemble. Thus the writer commanded others who were tempted to follow them into faithlessness to not forsake the assembly but to encourage each other more and more as the day gets nearer (Heb 10).
Clay's response: The reason your faith was strengthened as was mine Norman is because we
were freed from the bondage and burden of Law. That's what LAW without Grace does, touch that Ark and your dead. NEVER any peace! Hicup and die! Use the instrument and go to hell!
Take the Lord's supper any day but Sunday and die. Fail to take the Lord's supper EVERY first day of the week and go to hell.
ED: Tragically I am afraid you have gone from one extreme to the other. No OT figure was ever saved outside of Grace. No OT figure was ever saved by the Law. Heb 11 teaches us that every OT hero was saved "by faith", that is, trusting in the grace of God. They believed the promises! An Uzzah or a Nadab and Abihu is no different from an Ananiah and Saphira. They did n't trust God. We walk by faith; the jsut shall live by faith, trusting God's word. If in God's word I find the LS observed on the first day of the week, if I find that they sang praise, why should I be ridiculed for trusting in the word of God, especially when I discover some did not and were rebuked for going beyond the word of God. You want to make everything about "go to hell if you do this". It is not about that! God is the judge. What it is about is reverence. Do I revere God's word? Do I trust him enough to do his will and refuse to go beyond? That is the question.
