[Church_of_Christ] Doulos Meditation for April 20
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 1:20For in him every one of God's promises is a "Yes." For this reason it is through him that we say the "Amen," to the glory of God.
Reflection: When I was a kid, some people would loudly say "Amen" every time the preacher made a point they agreed with. Our class teacher said the word meant "so be it." (Side note: it's perhaps the most borrowed word in the worldalmost every language uses it.) The word derives from the Hebrew term for truth or true.
Christians have abused the wordit has far more meaning than "I agree with that," and we need to recapture the richness of the word. Our passage involves the promises of Godhis never failing faithfulness. The text is not saying God asks for our agreement, but that God awaits our pledgeour promise. To say Amen means I am committing myself to God in the matter of the truth before me. It is not a word to be used lightlydo I want to stand convicted of lying before God for all those times I said Amen but was merely agreeing with a speakernot at all promising God anything? In the primeval church the congregants together pledged themselves to the will of God. They made their pledge in Christ, motivated by God's Holy Spirit. It is worship in the truest formresponding to what we receive from God and generated by his Spirit within us and resulting in glory to God. Your time will be well spent reflecting on 1 Cor 1:15-22.
Prayer Starter: Father your promises are infallibly true and when we perceive your revelation in Christ, we find your Spirit prompting within us a response of commitment, faith, love, and obedience. We pledge from here on not to take the Amen lightly. Amen. Our blog is http://didialog.
