[Church_of_Christ] Re: Creeds
Greetings Clay, ED in reply
"Who knows the things of a man except the spirit of a man that is in
him?" Sincere! God knows those who are his. Disciples are learners. They
seek to know God's will and follow it. They also proclaim God's will
insofar as they understand it. To do less than that, is to do less than
God wills. Another claims that by their proclamation they cause division
and betray Rom 14. So shall they cease to proclaim what they believe,
thus displease God in order to please the other?
Was the purpose of Rom 14 to teach that we ignore all "sincere
confusion"? Did Peter ignore Simon's confusion in Ac 8? Suppose someone
influenced by the Greek thinking of the first century, sincerely
believed Jesus did not come in the flesh? Does his sincere confusion
make him less of a follower of the antiChrist?
Some reach a point where they reject God's authority and choose to
follow their own will. Are there some things we can reject God's
authority in regard to without risk? I think not. Why? Because a genuine
disciple never rejects God's authority knowingly. Others sincerely
believe their error is actually truth, be it belief or practice. But I
cannot know for sure, since I cannot see their heart. So what am I to
do? As long as one appears to be trying to please the Lord, I will
forbear, hoping for their growth and maturity and I will continue to
reason with them, for it may be me who is in error and in need of
understanding. As long as I believe the belief or practice is error, I
cannot participate. For to do so would end up being sin, even if it is
not itself sin, 1 Cor 8:11. So while Rom 14 provides a platform for not
judging others who are believed to be in error, it does not solve the
issue of division, since it does not provide liberty to sin against
one's own conscience.
