[Church_of_Christ] Re: The essence of worship
Greetings Ray and Ed,
Ray commented: CENI is a theological acronym. It has nothing to do with daily communication or the ordinary use of 'command', 'example', and 'inference'. CENI is the process used in Restoration hermeneutics to determine what God requires of Christians under the authority of the NT. God's instructions and requirements for worship, for lifestyle, for spiritual growth are all determined from CENI. It is a method of establishing 'authorized practices'.
ED replied: Talk about convoluted! I suggest you get a couple of books on interpretation and read them. Get one that represents a conservative denomination (one that takes the Bible seriously) too. Then get back to me. I noticed that Scott replied with the names of several, both of the RM and denomination,
Ray, I wouldn't go so far as to say that CENI is a Restoration hermeneutic and I'm assuming you are referring here to the Stone/Campbell Restoration movement, which was founded on the principle of "speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent. Of this movement, we also have the Independent Christian Church and the Disciples of Christ who have probable neither heard of CENI, nor have any awareness of its usage. It was at one time taught in many CoC teaching institutions, but not anymore. It is now only taught in their independent preachers schools. I don't think you'll find it taught at OCU, or Abilene or Pepperdine or any of their major teaching institutions. But I encourage you to check and correct me if I'm wrong.
Ed, your comment "one that takes the Bible seriously" is too condescending to even reply to.
Kindly, Cole
