RE: [Church_of_Christ] Great Speech
Greetings,
This was a reference to a tragic event in Colorado and I am hopeful that it will never be repeated anywhere else. At the same time, I’m a bit confused as the message. Prayer in school has never been illegal. It is only school sponsored prayers that are illegal. Individual students may pray at anytime where appropriate and not disruptive to other students, such as during classes. I honestly don’t see how this statement could be understood as an accurate reflection of prayer being reintroduced within public schools as there was no school sponsored prayer event. Simply, the individual prayers of students on behalf of themselves and their school mates.
Prayer has not been outlawed, any student can pray in accordance with his/her faith or religion. It is only school sponsored prayer that has been outlawed simply because people of all religions and no religion attend public schools and therefore, none of these can be elevated above another.
I wonder if school sponsored prayers were still legal, what the commentary might be if it sponsored Muslim prayers, Jewish prayers, Taoist prayers, Buddhist prayers, Wiccan prayers, Satanic prayers, etc.? Since public schools are funded with tax revenues and since it is communal contributions, then all faiths would have to be represented and sponsored by the schools, not just Christian prayers.
Something to consider.
Shalom,
Shawn
