Nehemiah's of Our Generation
It takes a lot of work to build up a church or ministry, much like rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem out of the rubble in Nehemiah's time. Each section of the structure was vitally important to the defense of the city. Breaches needed to be closed to discourage enemy onslaughts and to strengthen the weakest points. The people had a mind to work, but were quickly discouraged by the mocking, persistent threats of their enemies. Even though they had built part of the wall up to over half its height, they lost heart when angry outsiders caused them to doubt that they could ever complete the enormous task. They also began to fear unexpected attacks that would end the work for good!
Yet Nehemiah rallied the people and prayed to God, who is great and awesome! He urged them to fight for their families, their homes, and for the city. Then he instructed them to continue the work with one hand and hold a weapon or shield in the other, remembering the motto, "Our God will fight for us!" The people trusted God, yet carried their weapons, even when taking a break to go to the spring for water.
The walls around us today are crumbling down! The walls around individuals, families, and churches are weakening and gaps are appearing on every side. The enemy of God and of our very souls is talking his talk, gathering his legions, and demoralizing countless people of God. God has raised us up to be the Nehemiah's for this generation! He wants us to intercede for our people. He wants us to encourage them to stand in the gaps and labor in the spiritual battle that is raging. The breaches in the walls need to be closed and the foundation of the faith made evident to all! God is calling spiritual leaders to urge His people to stand firm, to watch and pray, and to work - yet always armed with the sword of truth and ready to take up the shield of faith!
How did the Jews fare in the Nehemiah project? They persevered and finished the wall with God's help. And their enemies saw that God was in it and they lost all confidence! So, like them, we must be assured that regardless of the negative comments and discouraging circumstances we all face in God's service, the Lord of glory will bring the victory and His truth and righteousness will prevail! Let's roll up our sleeves and pick up the first stones to build up our section of the wall before it is too late!
Father God, help us to intercede for individuals and families and then motivate our people as You empower all of us to remain standing in Your grace. Grant us success in Your sight and may our enemies be confounded. When our work is finished may we confess that the Lord did it and it is magnificent in our sight! In Jesus precious name. Amen.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. (2 Corinthians 13:14)
